How to be a stylish designer.

Posted February 18th, 2009 in Fashion by Zélia

A guide to the graphic-designer’s fashion.

You don’t know how to dress. Fashion has no meaning to you, other than buying a pair of jeans every two years or so. You don’t get the point of wearing anything otther than black. And there you are, a designer. Which means, you SHOULD be well-dressed, stylish, arty, whatever adjectives that fit your fancy. Or at least, that what it means for a lot of people in the street. So what? A few tips to look like a graphic-designer, and finally end those suspicious looks from your friends. (Beware: this blog-post is a not-so-serious one)

How to dress like a designer

This is a polyvore set. Enjoy it here!

  • 1. Wear big black nerd plastic glasses.
  • Because, if you’re a graphic-designer, you’ve got eyes troubles from using your computer too often. For some reason, designers, artists, architects, and so on, have a fancy for those geeky plastic glasses. Probably because your inner nerd is what you wanna show, like “hummm, yes, I love computers.” . If you don’t like thoses black frames, you can always wear sunglasses inside, or any original/coloured/strange eyewear.
  • 2. Wear hype Tees.
  • You’re supposed to be somewhat nerdy chic, remember? To avoid looking like a complete nerd, your choice will be set upon bright coloured retro tees, gaming tees, skate tees, and designers tees. A good choice to stand as a designer would be a font t-shirt, ideally a Helvetica one. If trying to be a little more “arty”, I suggest you to take a look at the bukacake blog, and their impressive selection of cool clothes. Band tees are okay. Joke tees are okay only if well fitted.
  • 3. Collect sneakers.
  • I never found out this one, but it seems that you should have a great collection of shoes, starting from the 80’s. Collectors are great. The more expensive, the better. For girls, you can collect shoes: high heels, boots, sneakers, flat pumps, you love them all, you buy them all. Especially buy heels you’ll never wear, in bright colors.
  • 4. Wear jeans, but good jeans.
  • Used where needed, not-that-usual blue jeans, ultra fitted skinny jean OR baggy jeans. You’ll look for it for ages, you’ll nver find it. That’s a universe rule.
  • 5. Wear a tie.
  • Preferably on a bit to small white collar shirt, a nice thin tie. For every occasion. Because, you know, you are so hype.
  • 6. Never wear a suit.
  • Are you a creative or what? Wearing a suit is like using comic sans, so mainstreaaaaam.
  • 7. Have a good fashionable haircut.
  • “Tony and guys” style. No mullet. Unusual haircolors, welcome. Fringe for girls. Guys: no one cares, you are a designer, “no time for that” – style. That will take you 2 hours in the morning to set up. Need help? Here.
  • 8. Use graphic-designers accessories.
  • Panton mug & messenger bags, helvetica tees, necklaces and moleskines, pixel-pushers buttons, type-related everything: you love pixels, show it off!
  • 9. Name your pets after graphic design.
  • Not really a fashion accessorie, but anyway. Pixel, magenta, CMYK, print, 2.0, all good names for your dogs or cats. Designer is a state of mind, never forget that.
  • 10. Be cool, shoot yourself!
  • Show off your daily outfit on the interweb, be it on your blog or on Lookbook. Now that you’re so trendy, show it to the world! And see plenty of people dressed just like you! Yay!
  • 11. Not enough, wanna be hardcore? Get a tattoo.
But not any tattoo, a designer’s one. The greatest fashion statement. Like this, or this, or this.

After this, if you’re mommy still thinks you look like an accountant on a funeral, I’m no help. Maybe try to change job?

See you tommorow for a real post,
May the ampersand be with you,
Zélia.

“Out-of-print PANTONE by Letraset posters that were used back in the old school days of print.” = vintage pantone love. Oh, you, pretty poster, will you be my valentine? So beautiful it hurts. The website is also quite mesmerizing. And for more Pantone goodies, the previous post.

Name my design company

Are we so cliché?

name my design company
Lacking imagination? A great way to find a designer’s company name in less than 3 seconds. (And oh, I’ll be back, someday, when my immune system will decide to allow me some rest.)
