inspiration
This has been a busy week, from mastering twitter basics to roaming through the sales with a flu (Bought a lot of undies, mind you).
Now, all I want to do is sleeping. But before that, I got some inspirationnal stuff to put in order.

. Flipping typical seems like a good tool to check fonts easily. I’m still waiting for a font explorer featuring a comparative chart like this.  (Via swismiss)
. Chase Lisbon did have a messy week with is Flick’r. He rocks anyway —  go an check the new version, but careful, this might not be safe for work.

. Oh, Sophia, what did happen to your giant salad servers??
. Mac users are bisexuals with asian fetishes? Heck yeah! Via ProfessionalWidow.
. It’s amazing what people can do with bubbles: Bubbles drawings and frozen bubbles.
. The book cover archive features not only great book covers but also useful link about designers.
. Iphone users have too much nice wallpapers to use, and thanks to smashing magazine, they’ll have a load more. I’m craving…
. Apple keynote sucked.  So, I don’t care ahah!
. I just felt in love with Glasgow. I must go, it’s like the city is calling for me.

Great week,
And now, for something completely different:
Work.
Ahah!

‘Their is a major disconnect between the life of a design student and the transition to being a design professional.”

Oh yes there is. I look forward to read this book, written by Andre Andreev and G. Dan Covert: sharing the failures and successes of the transition between the paradise of student life and the harsh professional world. There are already a good bunch of essays online,  that I highly recommend  you to read. I love “jobquitting”, “the list” and “how will you know when you are successful.” Everyday, I feel less alone about wondering about my graphic design career questionning. Thank you the internet!

Thread of words

Flora Commaret is a french designer, and that’s enough for me to talk about her. (Patriotic instant)

If you ever thought of embroidery as something boring, then you should start to change your mind. Her diploma project, “Cross Stitch”, presents a kit to make your own customized table… It gives a bright new shine to granny’s needle!! Take a look at her nice portfolio too, it smells good!!  Via Object graphik

I can’t make it any bigger!

Or the complaint of a graphic designer.

“Graphic design is not a matter of taste. Graphic design about problem solving — and while it’s very kind of you to propose your help, I’d really much prefer if you’d just trust me in my work. I’ve been trained you know, just as you were with you very own job. I wouldn’t teach a butcher how to prepare meat and I would’t tell my doctor how to cure me. You’ve hired me for my design skills, remember?

I’m listening to your suggestions and wills: you’re my client, and I do my best to satisfy your needs. I will note everything you tell me carefully and use it with great care. But please take into consideration that every design decision I take is motivated by experience, or worst, knowledge. Just like you do.

So no, I won’t make your logo any bigger if not neccessary, and nor would I add blue just because you like it better. Things are made for a reason. I do think when I design. If something bothers you, tell me, and we’ll see together how to solve it. But please, don’t tell me how to do it. ”

Have you never thought of telling something along this lines to a client? It feels so frustrating sometimes… You’d just want to go and shout “Do it yourself if it’s so easyyyyyyy!”.
But then comes the “politically correct” behaviour. And all you say is: I’ll do my best.
